BALTIMORE -- Out of nowhere, Chris Young is delivering on a daily basis for the New York Yankees. Young doubled and stole home in his latest surprising September performance and the Yankees beat AL East-leading Baltimore 3-2, ending the Orioles longest winning streak of the season at six. "Hes been really, really good," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Hes swinging the bat well and thats why he is in there." The Yankees won after being swept in a doubleheader Friday. New York stayed on the fringe of the wild-card race while Baltimores magic number for clinching the division remained at five. "Its a nice bounce-back win," Girardi said. Cut by the New York Mets in mid-August after batting .205, Young has produced in a big way for the Yankees. Hes hitting .400 with seven extra-base hits for his new team. Coincidentally, Youngs picture was on some preprinted tickets Saturday night for the Mets home game against Washington at Citi Field. Young doubled during a three-run second off Miguel Gonzalez (9-8). Speedy Antoan Richardson followed with an RBI single and then took off for second, beating the throw by Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph while Young scampered home without a return toss. "If I put the ball in tagging area hes out and were not talking about it," Joseph said. "I just didnt execute. I threw it up the line a little bit. If I put it on the money, hes out. I didnt do my job and it cost us a run." Shane Greene (5-3) improved to 4-0 in seven road starts this season, including a victory at Camden Yards in July. He allowed two runs and seven hits, striking out nine in 5 1-3 innings. "I was just trying to make one pitch at a time," Greene said. "I felt like early my slider was good and I could throw it for a strike a little bit more. Its good to come away with a win, for sure." Orioles manager Buck Showalter was impressed the way Greene handled his powerful lineup that leads the league in homers. "Hes good. He was their minor league pitcher of the year," he said. "You can see why theyre so high on him. A lot of cutters, a lot of command, a lot of different looks. You can tell hes pitching with a lot of confidence." David Robertson earned his 36th save, retiring Nick Markakis on a grounder for the final out with a runner on third. Brian McCann stopped an for 0-12 skid with his 19th homer, a solo shot in the second. Gonzalez lost despite giving up just three hits in six innings. "The stretch weve had the last three games, we havent really swung the bat well," McCann said. "It was nice to get on the board. We just needed a win. At this point in the season, every win is a big win." Steve Pearce had two hits, including his 17th home run, for the Orioles. Adam Jones, Jimmy Paredes and Markakis also had two hits each. Nelson Cruz hit an RBI single in the Baltimore third. Pearce homered in the sixth. TRAINERS ROOM Orioles: SS J.J. Hardy, who missed time over the past week with back spasms, returned to the lineup after sitting out the previous nights game. ON DECK Yankees: RHP Hiroki Kuroda (10-9, 3.91 ERA) will get the start. It will mark the fourth consecutive season Kuroda has made 30 starts. Orioles: RHP Chris Tillman (12-5, 3.36) will try to help Baltimore win the series. He has allowed three runs or fewer in 18 consecutive starts. SLUMPING Yankees SS Derek Jeter went 0 for 3 and is hitless in his last 20 at-bats, dropping his batting average to .251. "Sometimes you can be swinging horrible and you can get hits," Girardi said. "It can go the other way, too." Sunday is Jeters last scheduled game at Camden Yards. TORONTO -- In coach Randy Carlyles estimation, the Toronto Maple Leafs have had to make last-minute lineup decisions much more this season than usual, and theyll have to again Saturday night before facing the Philadelphia Flyers. Winger David Clarkson left the morning skate with a pulled muscle and is considered questionable. Its believed to be the same left leg problem that crept up at the end of Fridays practice although Carlyle didnt figure that would still be bothering Clarkson. "Kind of a little bit of a surprise again today for me," Carlyle said. "We have to make a decision later this afternoon." Carlyle said the Leafs have the option of recalling a player or dressing 11 forwards and seven defencemen. Carter Ashton could be inserted into the lineup up front or Toronto could go with 11 and seven for the sixth time in seven games. "There is some options," Carlyle said. "Its always tough when youre missing quality players, and nobody wants to do that, but in the situation if the player is not deemed healthy by our medical staff and himself, then we have no other choice other than to make decisions." Clarkson has four goals and six assists in 43 games for Toronto after starting the season with a 10-game suspension. Those 10 points are good for 14th on the team and tied with Dave Bolland, who hasnt played since November. Captain Dion Phaneuf will be in the lineup against Philadelphia as Carlyle said Friday. Phaneuf took part in the morning skate, his first time on the ice this week with teammates outside of game action.dddddddddddd "I feel good," Phaneuf said. "Obviously when youre not on the ice for a couple days, you want to get back, feel the puck a bit before you go right into a game." Phaneuf, who leads the Leafs in average ice time at 24:19 a game, has played in every game this season except the two he was suspended for boarding Kevan Miller of the Boston Bruins. That included games this week against the Columbus Blue Jackets and New York Rangers. Taking some time off between games is a matter of preservation for Phaneuf. "Sometimes when you have the opportunity to rest certain things, you want to take the time to do that," he said. "You weigh how much hockeys going to be played. "For me, it was good to be able to get those couple days to recharge and to rest a couple bumps and bruises." More than bumps and bruises have kept Bolland and tough guy Colton Orr out. Bolland hasnt played since having a tendon on the back of his ankle sliced Nov. 2, while Orr has been out the past six games. The Leafs open a five-game road trip Monday in Anaheim, and Carlyle hopes Bolland and Orr will be available by the end of it, March 17 at Detroit. "Orrsy skated again today, so Orrsys getting close," he said. "And with Bolland, its a situation as weve talked about before where were just waiting and biding our time and hopefully rebuilding that ankle, that area. "Hell give us the green light when he says hes ready." ' ' '
